Terms of Service

The ground rules for using Local. Please read carefully before creating an account.

A quick note on tone

These terms are written in plain English wherever possible. We're a small team in Foster City โ€” when in doubt, reach out and we'll explain in person.

1. What Local is

Local is a community platform connecting verified teen helpers (ages 14โ€“18) with families in Foster City, San Mateo, and Redwood City for babysitting, tutoring, pet care, and household tasks. We verify identities, host profiles, and facilitate introductions. We are not an employer, an agency, or a guarantor of outcomes.

2. Eligibility

Teen helpers

Ages 14โ€“18, residing in or attending school in Foster City, San Mateo, or Redwood City. Teens under 18 require verified parent or guardian approval before their profile goes live.

Families

At least one parent or legal guardian, 21 years or older, with a verified government ID and a residential address in our service area.

One account per person

Accounts are non-transferable. Sharing login credentials, impersonation, or registering on behalf of someone else is grounds for immediate removal.

3. Independent relationship

Teens and families negotiate their own terms directly โ€” rate, schedule, scope of work, and payment method. Teens are independent providers, not employees of Local or of any family. Families are not employers under Local; however, certain local, state, or federal laws regarding household help may still apply. You are responsible for understanding and complying with them.

4. Payments

Phase 1 (current)

Payments are arranged directly between families and teens โ€” cash, Venmo, or Zelle. Local does not hold funds or process transactions.

Phase 2 (coming soon)

Optional in-app payments with a transparent service fee. You will be notified before any changes take effect.

Taxes

Each party is responsible for their own tax reporting. Local does not issue W-2s or 1099s in Phase 1.

5. Your responsibilities

Tell the truth

Provide accurate identity, address, and profile information. Misrepresentation is grounds for removal.

Show up, communicate, cancel with notice

Follow the cancellation and no-show standards in the Community Guidelines. Reliability is how this platform stays healthy.

Keep communication on Local

Don't exchange personal phone numbers, social handles, or payment details until after your first verified session.

Respect the community

No harassment, discrimination, threatening behavior, or activity that violates the law. We reserve the right to remove anyone, anytime, for any reason consistent with these terms.

6. What Local doesn't cover

Local verifies identity โ€” not character, skill, or outcome. We are not responsible for injuries, property damage, disputes, financial loss, or the quality of any session. You accept full responsibility for assessing safety and fit before and during every booking. We strongly encourage families to carry appropriate homeowner's or renter's insurance, and to meet any helper in person before the first session.

7. Account removal

We may suspend or remove any account for violations of these terms, the Community Guidelines, or applicable law. You may delete your account at any time from your dashboard; your data is handled per our Privacy Policy.

8. Changes to these terms

We'll post updates here and email active users at least 14 days before material changes take effect. Continued use after that date means you accept the new terms.
